What is eBusiness Really?

Ask the average person what is eBusiness and they will most likely respond with an answer along the lines of eBay, Amazon.Com, NewEgg and so forth. This common association that is made that eBusiness is solely about online sales exchanges is not all there is to it. It is true that the companies that were just put forth are business to consumer electronic commerce sites and along with there counter parts in the business to business sector only make up a small part of what eBusiness is as we define if here at the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.

The definition of eBusiness plain and simple is electronic business. Electronic business is any business process that uses a digital means versus an analog or manual system. This means the replacement of paper-based, human-agent based or telephone-based personal transaction with transactions over electronic networks. The networks could be proprietary networks, like EDI, or electronic fund transfer networks between companies, or Lotus Notes, or the internal networks embedded in ERP, or could simply just use the internet.

The eBusiness program at Cal Poly Pomona teaches students how to use the tools and information gathered from these networks and modern business process to bridge the gap between the technological and the management sides of business. Our eBusiness students can walk both sides of the line of business operations management. Effectively understanding and implementing modern business technologies such as RFID, EPC Global networking, EDI systems and vertically integrated supply chain systems as well as having the analytical power and management skills to keep it working. Our students are often times the link between the old world styles of management and the new technologies that are changing the way business will be from here on out.

What is the difference between e-commerce and e-business?
E-commerce covers outer-facing processes that touch customers, suppliers and external partners, including sales, marketing, order-taking, delivery, customer service, customer loyalty management, and purchasing of both production inputs and indirect operating expenses. E-business, on the other hand, includes all business processes, both those external-oriented processes included in e-commerce and the more internal processes like production, product development, finance, human resources, information and knowledge management, risk management, workforce management, facilities management, etc.
